Snappy the pelican takes off above from The Fly (aka the Riverview at Audubon Park) after receiving a little TLC from the Audubon Zoo veterinary staff. The brown pelican, covered beak to tail with an oil-like substance, was rescued late last month by members of a crew boat near Southwest Pass. Senior zoo veterinarian Robert MacLean oversaw a thorough cleaning with detergent and water, followed by fluids, a hand-fed fish diet, x-rays and blood work. Three weeks later, Snappy was ready to take wing back into the wild.
