The Portal

The pothole was just a pothole

on a dirt road until the rain came

and the pothole became a puddle.

The puddle became more than

a puddle when it was photographed

and appeared as a miniature pond.

The pond reflected the tops of trees

all pointing to its center and

turned its surface into a portal.

At the center of the portal lay

a small white rock that created

an illusion of indeterminate depth…

All of which combined to

create a metaphor for

the source of all things.

I really enjoyed the connection between poetry, cities, and the idea of a portal . The way a familiar place can become a doorway to imagination, memory, or another way of seeing the world is a fascinating idea. This perspective makes the city feel like more than just a physical space—it becomes a place of discovery and creative possibility.
