Carlos Zervigon’s studio was originally a bakery. In the 1970’s, renowned New Orleans sculptor, Arthur Silverman took over the space. When Arthur retired, Carlos moved in.
The studio consists of one large open space. It has high ceilings, a scored concrete floor and plenty of natural light. The entire room is painted gallery white, and there are tools everywhere. Saws, files, sandblasters, drills, grinders, chisels, clamps and plyers are used to cut, shape, polish and distress glass. The results are beautiful sculptures of every imaginable shape, size, color and configuration.
“The only thing I don’t do here,” said Carlos, “is blow glass. I use an offsite hot shop for that.” As a result, the old bakery is relatively cool.
Carlos rents out the rest of the building to other artists. There’s Frances Rodriguez (see upcoming collage), Richard Sexton, and Olivia Pritchard. There’s also Cleaver & Co., a gourmet butcher shop.
According to Carlos, “As a community of artists, we try to keep the building’s creative mojo gong!” They’ve definitely succeeded!
